What is a Diabetes Health Insurance Policy? - Definition
A Diabetes Health Insurance Policy is a specialised Health Insurance Policy that covers Hospitalisation expenses for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and its associated complications. The Policy helps you manage the high costs associated with Diabetes.
Why do you need a Diabetes Health Insurance Policy?
Diabetes is a chronic lifestyle disease that has long-term effects on the body and also increases the risk of other health issues like stroke, and damage to eyes, kidney and nerves. India has close to 80 million people with diabetes. Diabetes treatment can often be expensive as it often leads to other related illnesses over a person’s lifetime. Thus, it is crucial that one opts for a Diabetic Health Insurance Plan especially if he/she is already diagnosed with diabetes or has a family history of diabetic patients. A Diabetes Health Insurance Policy provides coverage for expenses related to diabetes as well as any associated complications related to diabetes such as renal failure or bypass surgery.
Can People with Diabetes Get a Normal Health Insurance Policy?
Yes. People with Diabetes can get a normal Health Insurance Policy. However, they have to disclose diabetes as a Pre-Existing Disease. There will be a Waiting Period of 2-4 years before the Health Insurance Plan covers any Claim related to Diabetes or its associated complications. Some Health Insurance Plans even apply a loading and charge a higher premium for providing coverage for Diabetes.
What is Covered Under Diabetic Health Insurance Plans?
A Diabetes Health Insurance Plan provides coverage for the following:
- Hospitalisation Expenses: A Diabetes Health Insurance Plan provides coverage for Hospitalization Expenses including Room Rent, Nursing Charges, Doctors Fees etc.
- Pre and Post-Hospitalization Expenses: A Diabetes Health Insurance Plan also provides coverage for medical expenses incurred before admission and after discharge from a hospital for a Period of 30-60 days.
- Pre-Existing Diseases: A Diabetes Health Insurance Plan provides coverage for Diabetes Treatment without a Waiting Period while there is a Waiting Period of 2-4 years before the Plan provides coverage for other Pre-Existing Diseases.
- Daycare Procedures: Daycare Procedures are medical treatments which do not require a 24-hour hospital stay due to technological advancement. Diabetes Health Insurance Policies cover Daycare Procedures such as Cataract Surgery, Chemotherapy, Dialysis, and Minor Surgical Interventions.

- Evaluate Waiting Periods: Minimal or no Waiting Period for covering Pre-Existing Diabetes is ideal. Long waiting periods leave you vulnerable financially.
